Broadsword just dropped a massive developer livestream, and if you’re a Star Wars: The Old Republic player, the roadmap just got a lot more crowded. What started as a deep dive into the upcoming Game Update 7.9, “Legacy Reborn”, ended with a genuine “bombshell” segment regarding the game’s 15th anniversary and the launch of Update 8.0.
Here is everything you need to know about the end of the current era and the beginning of the next.
The immediate future of SWTOR is focused on closing the “Legacy of the Sith” arc. Update 7.9 takes players to the dark, stormy world of Khar Shian. This isn’t just another story chapter; it’s a collision course between Darth Jadus, Malgus, Shae Vizla, and Nul’s holocron.
The most interesting shift here is how Broadsword is telling the story. To capture the scale of this confrontation, players won’t just be locked into their own character’s perspective. You’ll actually swap into the roles of your allies during key sequences, allowing for a more cinematic, multi-front battle that moves away from the traditional “commander-centric” gameplay.
Broadsword is also leaning heavily into Quality of Life (QoL) fixes to reduce the friction of daily play:
Dantooine Overhaul: The Dantooine Encounters are being streamlined. The intro mission is now skippable for alts, and progression requirements have been lowered to make the zone feel less like a chore.
The Companion Terminal: One of the most requested features is finally arriving. A new section in the Companions window allows you to reclaim companions who are technically “ineligible” due to story deaths or departures. You can now bring your favorites back for gameplay and combat without breaking the canon of your story choices.
Seasonal Content: PvP Season 10 (“Honor in Battle”) launches with 7.9, followed quickly by Galactic Season 11, “Light and Shadow,” which reintroduces high-demand rewards from earlier seasons alongside new mounts like the Sapphire City Hovercar.
While 7.9 is the “finale,” the final segment of the stream looked much further ahead. Broadsword officially confirmed that Update 8.0 will launch in late 2026 to celebrate the game’s 15th anniversary.
This isn’t just a content patch; it’s a fundamental expansion:
Level Cap Increase: For the first time in years, the level cap is rising from 80 to 85.
Combat Reworks: Every class is getting at least one new ability or a major mechanical rework.
Welcome to Ryloth: The next major planetary expansion is Ryloth. It’s being built as a massive hub featuring “Dynamic Encounters” that change based on player activity in the open world.
New Operation: A three-boss Operation is confirmed to drop with the 8.0 launch, focusing on the new threats emerging after the Jadus/Malgus fallout.
For the community, this stream is a major vote of confidence. By showing off 8.0 now, Broadsword is signaling that they have a multi-year plan that includes substantial vertical progression (the level cap) and brand-new tech (Ryloth’s dynamic events).
Update 7.9 acts as the “clean-up crew,” resolving years-long plot threads and fixing legacy UI issues, while 8.0 provides the “carrot on a stick” for veteran players who have been sitting at the level cap since 2022. If you’ve been on the fence about returning to the galaxy, the bridge between 7.9 and 8.0 looks like the perfect time to jump back in.
