New York City is about to get a lot harder to see through, and a lot more dangerous to walk around in. Ubisoft just dropped the patch notes for The Division 2’s newest update, and there’s a genuinely packed slate here: a full seasonal event, a returning hardcore game mode, a Classified Assignment relaunch, and a creator collaboration spanning three different content creators. Here’s what’s actually in it, broken down without the jargon.
We also put together a full video walkthrough of the event if you’d rather watch than read: Dust Storm Event Video Guide.
The headline feature is the Dust Storm Event, running for three weeks starting July 21. The pitch is simple: New York is getting hit with dust storms that mess with your visibility and let enemies ambush you more easily. Everyone who logs in during the event gets a free cosmetic (the Parched Mask), and here’s the part that matters even if you’ve never played before: Warlords of New York, the game’s paid expansion, is free for everyone for the entire event. If you’ve been curious about the game or fell off before the expansion released, this is the moment to jump back in without spending anything, though you’ll need to be level 40 with the base campaign done first.
How the weather works: There are two storm states. A “calm” storm runs for about 18 minutes and just limits your sightlines. A “Raging” storm kicks in after that for roughly 8 minutes, cutting visibility further and spawning squads of enemies called Dust Devils to hunt you down. After a Raging storm passes, you either get another Calm storm or a short window of clear weather to regroup.
The enemies: Dust Devils are a Riker faction taking advantage of the chaos. They spawn in groups of four every six minutes and get bonuses based on how close you are to them—they resist status effects and take less damage at range, but if you get in close (inside 10 meters), they take a lot more damage. Translation: this event rewards aggressive, close-range play over sniping from a distance. During a raging storm, enemies keep spawning continuously, so a good run can net you up to 48 kills in one storm cycle.
Get 50 kills and you’ll trigger a boss fight against two enemies at once: Pall, a sniper who can turn invisible to your scanner, and Black Lung, a tanky machine-gunner backed by turret support. Beating them drops a Storm Key and a unique mask on your first win.
There’s also loot hidden around the map—20 caches you can track by ear (listen for a distinct sound cue since visibility is garbage) that refill every day. And once a raging storm ends, keep an eye out for the Scoured Hunter, a rare, tougher enemy that only shows up in that window and drops extra keys.
What you actually get: All those Storm Keys get spent at an event vendor for cosmetic gear (43 outfit and headgear pieces, with a bonus visual effect for completionists) or actual combat gear, including a new named weapon called the Rabid D50 and rare shots at Prototype-tier loot. There’s also a global community challenge—everyone’s kills count toward shared unlocks—plus personal milestone rewards for players who grind out enough keys on their own.
A new Classified Assignment, McMillan Reservoir Assault, launches the same day (July 21). It’s paywalled behind a specific bundle or a one-time purchase, but Ubisoft is sweetening the pot by rotating older Classified Assignments to be free for everyone, one per week, through early September. So even if you don’t buy the new one, there’s a steady stream of previously paid content opening up for free.
For players who want a tougher, more grounded experience, Realism Mode is back for the duration of the event. It’s a separate playthrough of the Warlords of New York campaign with a stripped-down UI, scarcer ammo, riskier skill cooldowns, and gear that actually behaves like real armor—heavier gear protects you more but slows you down; lighter gear does the opposite. Finishing it unlocks weapon skins, with extra rewards for players who complete it on a Hardcore character (meaning permadeath is on the table). Note: Anyone who played a previous Realism Mode character is starting fresh—those characters have been wiped.

Dust Storm Creator Collab Items
This is the part that stands out from a typical seasonal update. Three content creators—NGN, Charles, and FilipeRaaamos—each get their own in-game “project chain” running the length of the event. Every day, a new step unlocks in each creator’s chain, sending you to specific parts of the map to complete tasks. You can follow one creator’s chain or all three, and once a chain unlocks, it stays available until the event ends.
Rewards scale up as you go, ending with an exclusive backpack themed after whichever creator’s chain you finish. There’s also creator-branded apparel hidden around the map, and each creator is handing out arm patch codes through their own channels, so it’s worth actually following them if you want everything.
The Paradise Lost Incursion is getting refreshed on July 21 with a new Exotic weapon, Prima Donna, a marksman rifle that rewards patient, out-of-combat positioning by stacking damage buffs, then burning a stack to auto-heal you when you take a hit. It won’t replace the existing Exotic (Ouroboros) from that Incursion—both will drop from the same sources. Ubisoft is also enabling two Global Events (Ambush and Assault) inside the Incursion itself, specifically to give players who haven’t tackled Incursions before an easier on-ramp to get the new gun.
Stacked on top of everything else, there’s a rotating schedule of shorter buff events through August 11:
On the technical side, the Escalation activity is getting two mutator swaps: “ISAC Says” replaces Hotfoot (random debuffs you clear by completing specific actions, rewarding you with a rate-of-fire boost), and “One-For-All” replaces Suppressor (marked enemies share damage resistance with nearby allies, but damaging one spreads that damage to the group).
On the fix side, a notable one: Aaron Keener was getting stuck, refusing to leave the house during the Liberty Island mission—that’s now fixed, along with several other bugs around vendor stock, mission collectibles, and localization.
Bottom line: if you’ve been away from The Division 2, this is a good time to come back. Free access to the Warlords of New York expansion for three weeks, a genuinely involved seasonal event, and a creator collab that gives you extra reasons to explore the map all land on the same day.
