Alright, if you missed the Summer Livestream this week, grab a drink and get comfortable, because Broadsword actually showed up with substance this time. SWTOR 8.0 is shaping up to be the biggest structural change to how you play the open world since I started covering this game, alongside a new season and a fall event. Let’s get into it.
Quick housekeeping before the real news. Watch an hour of SWTOR on Twitch right now and you’ll walk away with the Ruhnuk Poster Decoration. Once 7.9.1 lands, that drop resets as a two-tier deal: one hour still gets you the poster, but stick around for five hours and you’ll snag the new Vectron Colette EM4 Mount too. Twenty-eight days to grab it once the update goes live, so don’t sleep on it.
Galactic Season 11, “Light and Shadow,” starts August 18th and runs the same way Season 10 did. Here’s the part that actually got my attention: rewards from Seasons 2 and 4 are coming back, Fen Zeil and Amity included. If you missed those companions the first time around, this is your shot. New customizations, a fresh armor set, companion mounts, titles, and Stronghold labels are getting stacked on top. We’ll get a full breakdown article once it’s closer to launch, and I’ll be covering every reward.
The Cartel Market’s picking up a new Accessories category too. Instead of buying an entire set just to get one piece you actually want, Accessories let you grab individual items to layer onto whatever look you’re already running. First wave is leaning hard into cybernetics, which honestly tracks given where the story’s been heading.
And Feast of Prosperity is back October 6th through November 3rd, bringing a new Waiter Droid look for C2-N2 and 2V-R8. If you’ve never done this event, it’s one of the more charming seasonal ones SWTOR runs.
Now we get into SWTOR 8.0, and I want to talk about the small stuff first because this is the kind of change that makes a game feel cared for. Fitted Pack gear, all those weapons and armor pieces you’ve been hoarding from daily logins and Galactic Seasons, is finally joining Collections. If you’ve been holding onto Legacy bank tabs full of Fitted Pack junk out of fear of losing it, that fear is gone.
Toys are becoming Abilities. Your Rest and Recharges, your Trainers, all of it moves off your inventory and straight onto your hotbar where it belongs. And Stronghold decorations are finally going to remember their state when you leave and come back. Leave the lights on, they stay on. It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of small thing that makes a virtual house actually feel lived in.
They’re also rebalancing leveling so players stop blowing past their class stories before they’ve even learned how their kit works. If you’ve ever hit level 40 with a character whose rotation you still don’t understand, this one’s for you.
Here’s where things get interesting. In 8.0, difficulty toggles are coming to the open world itself. Not just Operations, not just Flashpoints, the actual world. Daily Missions, World Bosses, your class stories, all of it.
Three tiers, same names you already know from group content: Story, Veteran, Master. Each one changes damage dealt, damage taken, healing, and XP gain. And here’s the part that matters most: it’s personal. You can run Master while your buddy standing right next to you stays on Story. Nobody’s forcing anyone into a difficulty they don’t want.
Story plays exactly like the game does today, no surprises there. Veteran is tuned closer to how SWTOR actually felt at launch, back when enemies could genuinely kill you and you had to rest between pulls instead of steamrolling through. Master is for the people who’ve been asking for a real fight for years. Elite enemies alone can be a threat, and pulling more than one pack without your cooldowns ready is a genuine gamble. I’ve been wanting something like this since the game rebalanced everything around bolster years back, and I’m curious to see if it actually delivers that old-school bite.
Ventures are still solo, subscriber-only content built for players chasing something extra, but 8.0 is splitting them into two paths tied directly to the new difficulty system. You’ll need to roll a dedicated new Venture character and pick Classic or Expert right at creation. Whatever you choose, that character is locked to it until every objective’s done.
Classic runs on Veteran difficulty and it’s built to chase that feeling of playing SWTOR for the very first time. Objectives cap around finishing the vanilla story at level 50, plus milestones like grabbing a crew skill or wrapping up planetary arcs. If you started playing anywhere near launch, this one’s basically nostalgia bait, and I mean that as a compliment.
Expert is on Master difficulty and it’s not messing around. Level 80 and up, Heroics, hunting down rare enemies, all under the hardest setting the game has. Every class can run both, and there are unique rewards waiting at the end of each. More specifics are coming, but this is shaping up to be the actual challenge run this game’s been missing.
Phase one of the SWTOR 8.0 Public Test Server is up right now. New abilities for Sentinel/Marauder, Vanguard/Powertech, and Sage/Sorcerer are ready to try, and you can get your hands on the first boss of the new Operation, Children of Nul, in both Story and Veteran mode. Full patch notes for this PTS phase are up on the official SWTOR forums if you want to dig into the ability changes yourself.
Broadsword’s promising more Let’s Play streams to walk through these features in depth, and more PTS phases are coming covering the rest of the Operation, Ryloth Dynamic Encounters, and further testing on Difficulty Modes and Ventures. If you care about how this game plays going forward, now’s the time to actually get on PTS and give feedback instead of complaining about it after the fact.

Between Difficulty Modes and the Ventures split, SWTOR 8.0 is Broadsword finally building an open world that bends to how you want to play it instead of forcing everyone through the same watered-down bolster experience. Add in the Fitted Pack and Toy cleanup and this is shaping up to be one of the most substantial updates the game has put out in a long time. Season 11 lands August 18th. 8.0 testing is happening right now. Get in there.
