Full spoilers ahead. Two episodes in, Season 4 had done a lot of setup and not much else. "Richmond's Got Talent" is the episode where that setup finally has to pay rent, and it mostly does. The Lady Greyhounds get their first match. That should be simple. Ted Lasso doesn't do simple, so naturally the road there involves a pregnancy, a rivalry nobody's explained yet, and a shipment of kits that vanishes into the ether two days before kickoff.

A Striker Down Before They've Even Started

The episode opens with the team's only striker finding out she's pregnant, which is good news for her and a five-alarm fire for everyone else. Richmond doesn't have a backup plan, so Alice half-jokes about open tryouts and Ted, being Ted, decides that's not a joke at all. What follows is a parade of hopefuls that gives the show room to sketch out its new roster without turning it into a checklist episode. It's a solid engine for the hour. Nobody watching Richmond's Got Talent needed the tryout montage to be the whole plot, and thankfully it isn't.

Gemma Jay Shows Up, and So Does the History

The name everyone's been dancing around finally has a face. Gemma Jay is the player with the talent Richmond desperately needs and a history with Alice that the show still isn't ready to spell out. She left football to study law, and something between her and Alice clearly didn't end clean. When she shows up on match day, it doesn't play as a twist so much as an inevitability the show's been quietly building toward since episode one. It works, mostly because nobody rushes the reconciliation. Alice and Gemma still have unfinished business at the end of the hour, and the episode is smart enough to leave it that way instead of wrapping it up in a bow.

Keeley's Uniform Crisis Is the Best B-Plot of the Season So Far

The kits go missing two days before the match, and what could've been a throwaway logistics problem turns into the episode's clearest statement about what this team actually means to the people building it. For Keeley, it's not just laundry. She wants the Lady Greyhounds walking onto that pitch looking like they belong there, and with half of Richmond already convinced this team is a mistake, presentation becomes its own battlefield. Roy's answer is to call in Phoebe and her friends to put something together for game day, and it's exactly the kind of goofy-but-earnest fix this show built its reputation on. It also doubles as a quiet Roy and Keeley check-in. The spark's still there. Neither of them is doing anything about it yet, and the show seems fine letting that simmer a while longer.

Rebecca Tries to Have Both Things at Once

Rebecca's storyline this week is smaller in scale but just as pointed. With Matthijs in town, she's stuck trying to find any real time alone with him while Richmond's launch of the women's team eats every spare hour she has. It's the classic problem of building something you believe in while also trying to hold onto a relationship that needs actual attention, and the episode doesn't pretend there's an easy answer. It's a quieter thread than the striker chaos or the kit crisis, but it grounds the hour in something more personal than "will the team win its first match."

Phoebe gets the episode's best line, and it lands somewhere you wouldn't expect. Walking to school with Roy, she casually reminds him that both teams are Richmond, cutting through all the "who cares about the women's side" noise in one sentence from a kid who clearly gets it before half the adults in the building do.

The Verdict

Where the episode stumbles is in how neatly it all resolves. Gemma shows up right on cue, the kits get sorted right on cue, and Richmond wins right on cue. Season 4 has leaned on solutions arriving exactly when the plot needs them a little more than earlier seasons ever did. It's not a dealbreaker here because the character work covers for it, but it's a pattern worth watching as the season goes on. Verdict: A confident step forward that finally gives the Lady Greyhounds a match, a rival, and a reason to care, even if the show is still leaning a bit hard on convenient timing to get there.

TL;DR (For The Skippers)

Richmond's only striker gets pregnant days before the Lady Greyhounds' first friendly, so Ted and Alice run open tryouts. Gemma Jay, a player with unresolved history with Alice, shows up on match day and turns the game around. Keeley's fighting a missing kit shipment that turns into a bigger statement about what this team means, and Roy pulls in Phoebe to save the day while their own spark quietly simmers. Rebecca spends the episode defending the team's existence to a press room that mostly doesn't want to hear it, and Richmond wins the friendly by the end. It's the strongest episode of the season so far, even if the show's starting to lean a little too hard on things working out exactly when the plot needs them to. Bottom line: Three episodes in, this is the version of Season 4 we were hoping for. Check out the rest of our Ted Lasso reviews here.
